about

Holland Island was a growing community in the early 1900s before its citizens realized the land was slowly disappearing. Made of mostly clay and silt, large portions of the island would crumble away in inclement weather, and residents began moving homes and even graves up higher on the island. By the '20s, most everyone had literally picked up their homes and moved away, leaving behind a few cemeteries and a simple, two-story house that would stand alone for decades as the surrounding water closed in on it's foundations.

Having known the island well as a boy, a retired minister named Stephen White purchased the remaining land - including the last standing house - in the '90s, determined to save it. He fought tirelessly to build up the land and protect the house from the elements until he fell ill in 2010. Sadly, the house fell that year, its jagged roof still jutting from the water until White and a companion set the last of it on fire and said a final goodbye from their boat.

White cites a gravestone he discovered in one of the Island's cemeteries as a significant piece of inspiration to his dedication. It belongs to a 13-year-old girl named Effie Lee Wilson, and bears the following epitaph:

Forget me not is all I ask
I could not ask for more
Than to be cherished by my friends
So loving and so dear.
Dearest Effie, thou hast left us
And our loss we deeply feel.
But tis God who has bereft us
He will all our sorrows heal.

Google hasn't updated their satellite images yet, so you can actually still see the house on Google Earth.

I wish we could keep Holland Island.

I don't know what's become of Stephen White.

But this song is for Effie.

lyrics

Forget me not is all I ask
When the waves break down the walls
Keep me here, keep me here, keep me here

The water's at the door again
Dig up the graves, dig up the graves
The water's at the door again
Dig up the graves and move to higher ground

Oooo.. All our sorrows, heal

Mr. White, child to child
I could not ask for more
But I was here before here slid into the sea
So stay here until here disappears

The water's at the door again
Dig up the graves, dig up the graves
The water's at the door again
Dig up the graves, dig up the graves
The water's at the door again
Dig up the graves, dig up the graves
The water's at the door again
Dig up the graves, and move to higher ground

Oooo... All our sorrows, heal
All our sorrows, heal
All...

The water's at the door again
Dig up the graves, dig up the graves
The water's at the door again
Dig up the graves, dig up the graves
The water's at the door again
Dig up the graves, dig up the graves
The water's at the door again
Dig up the graves, and move to higher ground
